Known as the “king of fruit” in Asian countries, the durian has quite the smelly reputation. The durian’s smell has been described as being similar to rotting garbage, but some researchers engineered a fruit with a more pleasant odor. This confused many people of Southeast Asia, where the smelliest durians are the most prized. Though the smell can be off-putting to some, the sweet creaminess of the flesh is something to be praised.

Durian is a high protein fruit with plenty of fiber which is ideal for those looking for plant-based protein sources. The fiber will help reduce the risk of digestive issues and many types of cancer as well.

Durian also come loaded with plenty of vitamins in minerals. In a 1-cup serving of durian is 80% of the daily recommended amount of vitamin C and 61% of thiamine. There is also plenty of vitamin B6, potassium, riboflavin and copper.

Durian is a meal all by itself! Try adding some cinnamon to balance the sweet creaminess. It can also be made into ice creams and baked goods or of course blended into smoothies.
